OSBERT SITWELL'S POEM "THE BLIND PEDLAR"

Osbert Sitwell was a prolific British writer who has published poems, short stories, novels and memoirs. Simplicity in style and satirical in theme were the hall marks of his poetry. His autobiography, Left Hand, Right Hand! (1945-50) was a work for which he was well remembered.

The poem "THE BLIND PEDLAR" in which Sitwell's cleverness and satire are fused, is a moving commentary of  a visually challenged pedlar who has a ring side "view" of life. Being an observer of life from the pavements with his wares laid out before him, he laments his inability to see even the wares that he sells. He repeatedly curses the moment of his birth which rendered him blind and unable to see the world as others do. He regrets not being able to see the beauty of nature whose breathtaking magnificence he describes poignantly. He indulges in self- consolation by saying that when he thinks of the suffering of the people, the ill effects of war, the selfishness of human beings and the decay of values, he is glad that he cannot see. The poem brings out Sitwell's contempt for war as a dehumanising force.

In the first three stanzas, he regrets not being able to see the world. Beginning with the very wares that he sells, which he is unable to see, he goes on to talk about how he is deprived of the beautiful sights of nature. It is with so much delight that the pedlar describes nature, expressing a deep desire to witness the first showers of April  and the newly bloomed flowers on a spring morning. While thinking of all the beautiful sights that are denied to him, his heart is filled with sadness and regret.

However, in the last two stanzas, the pedlar changes his stance. The poet's experiences in the First world War had left him bitter about it, having seen the abject suffering of the people. The fourth and fifth stanzas may be reflective of this idea as the pedlar states that he is glad that he is blind because he does not have to see the suffering of the young crippled men with burnt faces, a clear reference to wounded soldiers.

On the other hand, he is also glad that he does not have to see the rich and selfish who have thrived on the sufferings of the others and continue to thrive on their wealth. Apart from reflecting his protests' against smugness and hypocrisy. "The Blind Pedlar' has a freshness of movement and definiteness of purpose.

MAKE A GRAND TRIP TO GUWAHATI

Guwahati the capital of Assam is "The Light of the East"  and is the gateway to the state and to the entire North East region. Straddling the banks of Brahmaputra, this former capital of Kamrup kings is a crowded, busy river -town and a major commercial hub for the region. Surrounded by paddy fields and ancient rain -forests. Guwahati is home to many temples that date back to Vedic and puranic times.

The Kamakhya Temple dominates the life of Guwahati, as much as does the great Brahmaputra river. One of the most revered shrines of the Hindu faith, the temple is located on Neelachal hills. The temple offers grandstand views of the Brahmaputra and its surroundings. The reigning deity here is Goddess Parvati. A rush of devotees throngs the temple during the Ambubachi puja

Amongst some of the other holy places in Guwahati is the Bashishta Ashram dating back to the time when the great sage vashishta visited this spot on the confluence of the sandhya, Lalita and Kanta streams and set up his ashram here.

The Nabagraha temple on the Chitranchal Hill, is an important centre for the study of astronomy and astrology. Located in Jorpukhuri, the Ugratara temple is dedicated to an incarnation of Goddess Kali. The Dirgheshwari temple is dedicated to an avatar of Goddess Durga. The Ashvakianta temple offers superb views of the city against the Brahmaputra river.

A river cruise on the mighty Brahmaputra is a wonderful opportunity to get a feel of this legendary river. Catch the ferry travelling between sukheshwar ghat and North Guwahati or travel a little more stylishly in one of the state tourism - run vessels. Top it off with a trip to Sualkuchi an hour's drive away to explore the dazzling world of Assam silk.

A GARDENER AND THE CREATOR OF JUNGLE VASE

Gardening is a hobby enjoyed by many through out the globe. Its bestows many with numerous benefits and the joy of producing fruits , flowers and vegetables on their own. The count of the plants and trees and their produce will be at a nominal numbers, but here is a great number that will definitely make you stunningly surprised and make  you feel that "Nothing is Impossible"

Here is a blogpost about a gardener who created a mini forest with 4000 trees in an area of 850 sq ft. She is Sakshi Bharadwaj an assistant professor by profession and a environment lover by hobby. She has grown plants, which emit high levels of oxygen, absorb radiations and have medicinal values. with this efforts she became an inspiration for many and shares her experiences by addressing online workshops nationally and internationally on gardening and horticulture.

Sakshi Bhardwaj started to develop a backyard garden in the year 2018, she started using jungle cultivation techniques by the year 2019. We always had organic kitchen waste including leftover vegetables, fruit skins and coconut husk which takes long to decompose so I started using it as a planter and turned kitchen waste into vermi- compost and bio-enzymes states Sakshi in an interview to a News agency.

In the year 2020 she came across an online gardening community, who were growing exotic and rare plants. With her wish to expand her garden she reached out to the community members and sourced several of the exotic plants and with it enhanced her collection.

Sakshi always nurtured love for nature and which is why she pursued microbiology in her student days. The keen interest grew further as she started working as an assistant professor of Agriculture. “As I taught plants’ genetics, I thought of having a first-hand experience of these theories in my own garden,” she said. She has named the unique garden ‘Jungle Vase’, Sakshi said that a vase normally has a plant similarly the garden holds a mini forest like a vase.

Sakshi Bharadwaj’s green effort has entered into 2021 edition of OMG Book of Records for ‘creating a 850 sq ft Sustainable, Urban, Vertical & Overhead mini jungle.

A LOOK AT THE POEM "BIRD WOMAN" BY MENAKA SHIVDASANI

Menka Shivdasani is a founder  member of the poetry circle, which began in 1986 in Mumbai. Her poems have been published in numerous journals and anthologies, both in India and abroad. She is the Director of The source, an editorial services company based in Mumbai. She is also the Mumbai coordinator for the global movement 100 Thousand Poets for change.

"Bird Woman" is a poem written by Menka Shivdasani. The poem symbolises the lives of women, many of whom are caught within the four walls of their homes, firmly bound by the clutches of regressive ideas. The bird woman represents the desire of many women who wish to set themselves free. It is about a woman who frees herself from  a dark and dingy room and flies into the brightness through a key hole, and experiences a whole new world outside. In the  dingy room with her, the bird woman says, were others like her jostling for space- the nomad, the devil woman and the sad little lady. This is suggestive of the fact that it is not just one woman's struggle to be liberated but almost all women who are oppressed and suppressed in some way or the other and desperately in need of emancipation.

All the women were rushing out through the key hole but only the bird woman managed to escape into the brightness outside, trying to reclaim her self -respect and dignity. After many years of living in the claustrophobic room, she felt the urge to come out of the box. When she found the wings folded up behind her back, she was amazed at the fact that she had wings and  she could not believe that she had it all these years.

Though it was dirty and made a very rusty screech, she managed to fly about with it once she got started. The woman was able to befriend the birds and also had talons. Once she started flying in the blue air, breathing was a problem but she tried her best to fly high. Now the bird woman was upset that she had left behind the other women as they continued to languish in darkness. She felt it was high time she liberated herself from obscurity even though it was a Herculean task to escape from such dreary place.

The poet brings out the idea that when a woman is liberated, initially she has problems coping with the new found "freedom- breathing is still a problem sometimes." But she is seen slowly adapting to her freedom, making friends, experiencing new things and living life on her own terms. In this poem, the dark room stands for the enslaved lives of women and the "keyhole", the tiny opening , becomes the escape route, suggesting that it is extremely difficult for women to break free from the shackles and liberate themselves.

The nature, form or pattern of the sentences can be changed without changing the meaning of the sentences. This enables one understand  that there are many different ways of expressing an idea.

We can change a simple sentence into a complex or a compound one, an affirmative sentence into an interrogative or an exclamatory one. In making the transformations there are certain definite patterns to be followed.

Examples :

1. Statement to Question

Are we satisfied with our experiment?

2. Simple to complex

He did not admit that he is ignorant

3. Simple to compound

THE MASTER WHO TAUGHT LIFE LESSONS THROUGH LITERATURE

“Read as much as you can because most writers, when they were young, were voracious readers.’’ – Ruskin Bond.

I missed a chance of meeting Ruskin Bond sir during his visit to Chennai way back in 2012. He was in Chennai, as a part of the Landmark Ruskin Bond Tour, to celebrate the book store’s 25th Anniversary.

From that day it is in my bucket list to meet him in person at least once in my life time. His is with readers through his writings and books. For me he is a teacher – a distant teacher who taught how to read Literature and to infer messages from it and learn the art of writing through reading books. Many readers will agree with me that apart from encouraging to read, his writings help us to

1.      To be an optimist

2.      To  enjoy the art of gardening

3.      To develop resilience

His works when read from a younger age is sure to create a remarkable future for the reader. His writings are more than inspiring and encouraging. Though I started late,

I want to thank him for being my teacher (distant teacher). On his 88th Birthday today, I penned  a poem for him which I would like to share with you all fellow bloggers

Mr. R – Our SIR

Ruskin Bond with his radiant smile,

Round face, rosy cheeks, long nose

Upon which sits a shiny spectacle

Writes witty words of wonders of Nature.

His words make us feel the hilly breeze,

Smell the fragrance of flowers,

Hear the buzzing sounds of insects,

Have the window view of Dehra

Taste the sumptuous breakfast.

Lucky are the pens and papers

Who stay along with his shadow

And make his thoughts get life.

His hands and fingers work hard

To make us enjoy a feast of his writing.

Ruskin Bond is our super hero

Who is turning 88

A day of celebration for us for our SIR

Who added a sparkle in our lives.

LONG LIVE AND LEAD US SIR !

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Which book of his are you planning to read again on his birthday today? Do share it in the comments.

THE ROOM ON THE ROOF BY RUSKIN BOND

THE ROOM ON THE ROOF by RUSKIN BOND captures the life of an orphan who is obsessed staying with his guardian. It presents before the readers’ the feelings of a teenage boy and his wish to explore the new way of life which is different from the guardian’s.

The book is in a simple style of writing which makes it an easy read for the children too. The book is the winner of THE JOHN LLEWELLYN RHYS MEMORIAL PRIZE. The book received tremendous appreciations and it stands till to date as the best reader for any time. In 1953, at the age of 19, Ruskin bond sent the manuscript to publisher Andre Deutsch. It took several years of correspondence between him and his editor, and many changes to the manuscript, for the book to see the light of the day.

“A CLASSIC STORY OF ADOLESCENCE AND COMING OF AGE THAT HAS MESMERISIED READERS FOR OVER FIFTY YEARS.’’

Ruskin Bond finely presents the Indian life style in the hills of Dehra. Chaat- stalls, water tanks, maidan, bazaar and many other features of the town are brought to life.  The book entirely picturises the lively discussion held among the group of teenage friends.

THE ROOM ON THE ROOF is a fantastic attempt by the author where he skilfully describes the natural beauty of the hilly region of India. The book is set in Dehra Dun, a valley town in north India where the author spent a good part of his childhood. Situated in the Doon valley, bounded by the Himalayas to the north and the Shivalik Hills to the south, Dehra was much favoured as a residential town by the British. However, it was founded earlier, in the 17th, by Guru Ram Rai, son of Guru Har Rai, the seventh Guru in Sikh history. It was a part of the hill kingdom of the Garhwal Rajas till the 19th century.

In 1814 the British took possession of it. Today,it is the capital of the state of Uttarakhand. It is popular tourist destination, and some of the places to visit nearby are Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, and Chakrata, all hill station, Haridwar and Rishikesh. It is also known for the many educational institutions that are situated nearby, including the famous Doon school and Welham Boys School and Welham Girls School.

No other writer can describe the nuances of the vibrant Doon valley other than Ruskin Bond.  His words flow in praise of this wonderful hill station.

The book also focuses on the Anglo- Indian community, which came into being during the colonial era when many Englishmen who served in India married or had relationship with Indian women. Anglo –Indians are the children of these unions. The main character “Rusty” is an Anglo –Indian boy and the issues of him belonging to a different community is handled sensitively.

I quote, “What are you my son, are you one of us? I have never, on this river, seen blue eyes and golden hair.”

Unfortunately though, the community found it hard to gain acceptance in either British or Indian society. Labelled “half- breeds” and “half-castes” and mocked at for their “chi-Chi” English, they faced rejection when they were sent to Britain for education or work. The Indians, on the other hand, looked upon them with suspicion and distrust. Caught between their yearning for a “homeland” most had not even seen and a culture they could not identify with, the Anglo-Indians chose to take the side of the British during India’s struggle for freedom.

The author’s adolescence was peppered with characters you get to meet in the book. As you might imagine, many of the incidents that happen between the friends in the book really did take place.

The author without fail helps to familiarise the readers with the location’s natural beauty bringing it exactly before the eyes of the readers. His locations’ too deliver dialogues along with the characters which makes the readers travel to the location along with the author.

I Quote “The smart shops and restaurants were closed. In the bazaar, oil lamps hung outside each doorway; people were asleep on the steps and platforms of shop fronts, some huddled in blankets, others rolled tight into themselves. The road, which during the day was a busy, noisy crush of people and animals, was quiet and deserted. Only a lean dog still sniffed in the gutter. A woman sang in a room high above the street- a plaintive, tremulous song – and in the far distance a jackal cried to the moon. But the empty, lifeless street was very deceptive; if the roofs could have been removed from but a handful of buildings, it would be seen that life had not really stopped but, beautiful and ugly, persisted through the night.

The book colourfully covers the festival of colours –Holi. The drum beats, colour splashes and the coming of spring marks the Holi and it is lively explained by the friends to rusty which makes him to join the celebrations. The eagerness to know about the festival and his wish to be a part of it makes Rusty to react to the drum beats and reaches the place of the celebrations.

I quote Rusty woke to the sound of the second drum –beat, and lay in bed and listened; it was repeated, travelling over the still air and in through the bedroom window. Dhum!.. A double –beat now, one deep, one high, insistent, questioning…

The author showcases the agony of Rusty in not finding a job, a place to live and being alone. It also emphasises how he struggle with himself. With the support of friends and his determination to be independent fetches him an opportunity to lead his life in his own way.

Ruskin bond effectively puts in the role of happiness in once life and suggests that being happy is most important to enjoy the things around us.

I quote “They walked home in the evening. The evening was full of sounds. Rusty noticed the sounds because he was happy, and a happy person notices things. “

This book helped Ruskin Bond to establish himself as a writer and he went to become one of India’s most prolific and accomplished writers. He has more than three hundred short stories, novels and essays and numerous children’s books to his credit and this work “The room on the roof “was made onto a television serial.

The author always leaves the message “to cultivate the habit of reading in order to become a writer.”  He read voraciously, everything from comics to literature to erotica. He remembers being strongly influenced by Dicken’s David Copperfield and Hugh Walpole’s Fortitude. So great was his love for books that he decided even before leaving school that he would be a writer. His readings and his sheer hard work paved way to realise his dream.

Like Rusty, young Ruskin was something of a rebel. In scenes from a writer’s Life he says :  I was very much my own person- strong in my likes and dislikes, very stubborn, wanting and getting my own way, my own room, my own privacy; old fashioned enough to believe in loyalty to friends; scorning money for money’s sake; ready to discover things about myself and come to terms with a wayward, sensual nature; above all, eager to express myself in the language I’d learnt to love; ambitious enough to want to see my name in print. To love and be loved; to be free. Free to wander where I pleased; read what I liked; be friends with those who attracted me.

Ruskin bond’s love and yearning for Dehradun, his father’s death, purchase of a brand new type writer paved way to start writing the book THE ROOM ON THE ROOF.

Like the words of Kishen, I quote “One day you‘ll be great, Rusty. A writer or an actor or a prime minister or something. May be a poet! Why not a poet, Rusty?”

Ruskin Bond is a great writer and a poet inspiring thousands of people around the world. His writings put forth the reality and encourages the readers to believe in their will power and continue their journey in their desired path.

Ruskin bond has created so many characters with unique voice and they stay and support the readers in every walk of life. Though Ruskin bond is often termed as children’s writer, his writings are enjoyed and cherished by adults too. His interviews and talks in literary festivals supplement his writings and readers look forward to more books from him.

Ruskin Bond’s style outshines others and wins the hearts of the readers. A sample of it here: “They who sleep last, wake first. Hunger and pain lengthen the night, and so beggars and dogs are the last to see the stars; hunger and pain hasten the awakening, and beggars and dogs are the first to see the sun.”

Like these his words show us the real picture rather than just describing the situation. His words are apt and touching which makes him stand out from the crowd.

The book is divided into 4 parts , each part has a minimum of three chapters in it.  Each chapter has a wonderful quote and exercises, where ever necessary.

The author finely worked to bring out the best possible examples through TV shows, her fan mails, messages and from her personal life. She carefully crafted a measure to make our lives best by our own self.

In page 26 of this book, author puts forth the benefits of  being an optimistic which is the result of the MAYO CLINIC AND VERYWELL MIND, "THE STILLNESS PROJECT."

The whole book is wisely presented covering all the essential features which demands a magic mindset. Though the situations discussed in this book are similar to  those faced by many, but the path to take, the way to face, handle and move is certainly a novel approach which is highly helpful and reassuring the bright life ahead.
