Happiness 101 is an essay by Geeta Padmanabhan. She is a freelance journalist, writer and blogger based in Chennai. Her blog, Grandma's Tales is very popular in the cyberspace. She has had a long career as an English teacher and is an expert in the language. She regularly contributes to various newspapers and journals.
This essay by Geeta Padmanabhan, aptly titled "Happiness 101", which seems like a university course, explores the idea of happiness in the most scholastic manner. The essay seeks to understand what happiness means to different people at different times. She believes that for most people the pursuit of happiness is the ultimate goal in life. The author adopts a multi-pronged approach to understand happiness. The essay throws light on the various researches that have been conducted on the subject of happiness.
Social scientists, who have tried to understand the meaning of happiness, have come up with definitions such as "Positive emotions", "satisfaction" and "peace of mind." One debate which probably goes on is whether money can buy happiness. She quotes several economists who have conducted research on the relationship between money and happiness. The author brings out all the conflicting ideas in order to understand the elusive meaning of happiness.
Happiness, as the author points out at the beginning of the essay, means different things to different people, ranging from finding one's lost cellphone to watching the rain. Considering that most people are in perpetual quest of happiness, the author urges the readers to approach life with a sense of humour, "Live life with zest, pursue career, love and friendship with good values'' in order to attain lasting happiness. The author poignantly concludes by stating that happiness comes from within and that it is a choice that we make.
