ENAMEL WORK - A BRILLIANT ART

Enamelwork is an age old technique of decoration whereby metal objects or surfaces are given a vitreous glaze that is fused onto the surface by intense heat to create a brilliantly coloured decorative effect. It is an art form noted for its brilliant, glossy surface, which is hard and long-lasting.

India is the only country in the world where expertise can be seen in enamel work over and above the gold and silver work. Expert artisans for enamel work are found abundantly in Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi and Hyderabad.
Enamels can be applied to glass, ceramics, and most commonly, metals. The application of enamels can add color to metals such as copper, silver, and gold. The powdered glass can be applied either wet or dry to a surface. The enamel melts, flows, and fuses to the surface in a smooth coating when heat is applied.
A form of enamel painting, primarily used in fine jewellery, meenakari, or minakari, is popular in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

Enamel Jewellery has not lost its significance even in the modern times although its roots go back into the 13th Century BC. It is known by several names, including porcelain enamel, painted glass, and vitreous enamel. It is one of the oldest techniques for decorating the surface of jewellery. The thing with enamel jewellery is that it keeps pace with time and changes to meet the demands of the modern era. It is a substance that is the only way in which the artist can bring to life his creative vision.
