GAME 5
At first basic requirements of the game:
Number of persons: Minimum 2 and Maximum 5
Preferred age group: Above the age of 10
Duration of the play: More than an hour
Best time to play:
Night
Preferred surface: on the floor or on the table where
the Paramapadam sheet is evenly placed.
Things required to play: Paramapadam sheet, dice
(plastic or brass) and the usual chozhi (shells) or dried tamarind seeds, etc.
(Note: coins should be different for each person, one
coin is required per person)
How
to play: The play begins after the toss and the one who wins, starts by rolling
the dice. With 1 in the dice the play starts- one can move his/her coins after
one only.
One can roll the dice only once in his/her turn, unless they get 1,5, 6 or 12.
The coins move in the Paramapadam according to the number in the rolled dice.
In certain numbers there will be a picture of snake and in few others the picture of ladder. If the player’s coin stands in a snake, he /she should move the coin to the number in which the snake’s tail ends whereas with the ladder the player can climb with his/her coin and settle in the number where the ladder ends. The winner will be the one who reaches the last number (100 or more, it depends on the sheet) in the Paramapadam sheet first. There will be lot of ups and downs in the game which will make it interesting and lengthier too.
Reference to this game: This game is also called as Parama pada sopanam and it is majorly played by elders on the religious days like Vaikunta Ekadashi and Mahasivarathri. On these days elders do fasting and will be awake throughout the night and during that time this game is played. It is a common belief that this game is a symbolic representation of man’s attempt to reach the feet of the Lord. The game is introduced to children to make them understand and deal with the challenges in life.
