WHY MUSIC GAINS IMPORTANCE IN THE MONTH OF MARGAZHI

Lord Krishna says that among the months He is Margazhi, indicating its auspiciousness. Andal's Thiruppavai is recited in Vishnu temples in Margazhi. It was in Margazhi, in the Arudra star, that Lord Nataraja showed His divine dance to sages Vyagrapada and Patanjali.

Music is central to the importance of Thiruppavai, a collection of 30 poems by the poet-saint Andal:

Part of a tradition

Thiruppavai is part of the pāvai genre of songs, which is a Tamil tradition of unmarried girls performing rites during the month of Margaḻi.

Recited in many forms

Thiruppavai is recited in many forms, including singing the verses in groups through the streets.

Every December, the state celebrates classical music and dance forms with renowned musicians and artists gathering to play in various temples, sabhas, or auditoriums.

It's a time to simply celebrate music in all its forms, from classical and traditional to contemporary and experimental genres. It encourages people to appreciate the rich tapestry of musical styles around the world.

The month of Margazhi is a time for music and dance in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, with Carnatic music at the center:

Margazhi festival

A music and dance festival that celebrates classical music and dance forms. The festival features performances by renowned musicians and artists and takes place in sabhas (cultural institutions) and temples.

Carnatic music

A central part of the festival, with rasikas (connoisseurs) coming together to listen to music and debate ragas and compositions.

Tiruppavai and Tiruvempavai

Recited during the month, these works are from the Bhakti era and celebrate devotion and austerity. The Tiruppavai is about Andal awakening her companions and leading them to the Lord, while the Tiruvempavai is about a group of women singing about the Lord's glory.

Margazhi is a marquee event that draws music lovers from across the globe and has been a part of Chennai's cultural fabric for decades.
