TRANSLATIONS OF TIRUPPAVAI

  


 

The Tiruppavai is a collection of 30 stanzas, or pasurams, that are considered to be some of the most popular examples of Vaiṣṇava Tamil devotion. The hymns are attributed to the female poet-saint Andal, who is believed to have lived in the 9th century. The Tiruppavai is part of the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, a collection of works by the Alvars, a group of 12 poet-saints. 

The poem describes a specific mode of Viṣṇu worship, as well as his omnipotence and majesty. It also speaks of ceremonial austerity, self-forgetting service to the Lord, and more. 

The Tiruppavai, a collection of Tamil hymns, has been translated into several languages, including Malayalam, Telugu, Sanskrit and English: 

 However, some say that it is difficult to translate poems like Tiruppavai into other languages because they intricately express the experiences of seers and sages. 

Malayalam

Thiruppavai in Malayalam is a commentary and translation of the Tiruppavai into Malayalam. 

Telugu

Mullapudi Venkataramana translated the Tiruppavai into Telugu as Melupalukula Melukolupu.

Tiruppavai Book is a book that contains the lyrics of the Tiruppavai in English.
