WATCHING FAVORITE SHOWS AGAIN AND AGAIN

Nostalgia is one of the main reasons people tend to watch and re-watch their favorite pieces of content. This is especially true when we re-watch movies and shows we loved as a child. We feel all fuzzy inside—a sense of satisfaction during unpredictable times.

Repeated viewing fulfills emotional needs, gives us comfort, provides a sense of control over our lives, and connects us with our past. Familiar shows provide an appealing mix of relaxation and stimulation, and an unexpected combination of old and new.

Watching the same show repeatedly increases your perceptual fluency.  Numerous studies have shown that engaging in enjoyable activities such as watching TV can help activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps counteract the effects of stress on the body. When we're stressed, our bodies release cortisol, a hormone that can have negative effects on our health

Watching the same show repeatedly increases your perceptual fluency which means that the brain processes it easier than it would if it was something new. It's lighting up the same neuropathways over and over again, priming them for activation.

Seeing familiar storylines and faces can give the brain a rest from dealing with the unknown and the need to make decisions.

Re-watching our favorite TV shows can also be incredibly comforting and provide a safe space to regulate our emotions and decompress. These shows give a sense of safety, especially when we may be stressed out from work, struggling in our relationships, or anxious in general.

Do watch your favorite shows and be healthy. By the way, what’s your favorite show that you watch again and again?
