Fall and pico
are essential elements in saree draping. Fall refers to a strip of fabric that
is attached to the inner border of the saree to add weight and structure,
helping the saree drape gracefully. It also protects the saree from touching
the ground and getting damaged.
Picot (also
called Pico) is a series of loops of thread done at the either ends of the
saree to give it a sound finish and a bit of a volume which eases the draping
method. It also prevents the lose threads from coming into existence which
might happen when saree is worn and washed many times.
Pico refers
to the fine, rolled hemming done on the edges of a saree to prevent threads
from coming apart at the end and to give it a neat finish.
Embroidery
that cross-stitches while opening holes is called Pico or Pico embroidery,
while the embroidery that sews using zigzags without opening holes, is called
Picot or Picot embroidery.
Edging is
done on both ends of the Saree, as it helps in giving a smooth edge to the
drape and protects it from frayed edges.
Fall is
attached from the wrong side of the sari, and must not be visible from the
outside. The Sari Pallu and the final drape leading to Pallu don't have the fall.
Edging is done on the loose ends of the saree so that threads don't come out.
Saree fall
refers to sturdy cotton or terry-cotton fabric that is sewed and attached
to the hem of a saree, such that it covers the initial drape and pleats area
only. Fall is attached from the wrong side of the sari, and must not be visible
from the outside.
This color of
fall must not appear through your saree in any way. It protects the saree
from stretching and tearing. In absence of a saree fall can destroy a cotton
saree in less time. It adds a bit of weight to the saree so it helps to keep
the drapes in their place throughout.
Net sarees,
chiffons and georgettes should be reinforced with good saree falls. Delicate
sarees like silks, ones with fragile resham edges like Banarasis and pure
handloom ones must be worn, only after they have been sewed with a fall, unless
you want to risk tearing the edges of your expensive sarees.
Cotton Saree
Fall: Cotton saree falls are lightweight and easy to maintain. They are ideal
for daily wear sarees. Silk Saree Fall: Silk saree falls are soft and smooth in
texture. They are perfect for silk sarees and other heavy sarees.
You should
redo the pico and fall of your saree every 6 to 8 months if you are wearing it
on a regular basis. But if you wear a saree occasionally, then redo the pico
and fall when you start observing wear & tear, fraying, or any damage.
