Hearing is essential for maintaining relationships and
connections with friends and family, fully participating in team and community
activities, and experiencing life events. Hearing makes it possible to engage, listen, laugh, and enjoy many of the
things that help shape your quality of life.
Hearing is effected with age:
Age-related hearing loss (or presbycusis) is the
gradual loss of hearing in both ears. It's a common problem linked to aging. One in 3 adults over age 65 has
hearing loss.
Long-term
exposure to noise and some medical conditions can also play a role. In addition, new research suggests that certain
genes make some people more susceptible to hearing loss as they age. Conditions
that are more common in older people, such as high blood pressure and diabetes,
are associated with hearing loss.
World Hearing Day:
World Hearing Day was
established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2007, and is celebrated
every year on 3 March since then. The day aims to highlight the issues of hearing
loss and other defects globally, and the importance of early identification,
prompt intervention, and preventive measures.
World Hearing Day is held on 3
March each year to raise awareness on how to prevent deafness and hearing loss
and promote ear and hearing care across the world.
World Hearing Day is an
important step towards a world where everyone has access to ear and hearing
care, regardless of their financial situation or location, by drawing attention
to the impact of hearing loss on people's quality of life and the need for
inclusive health policies.
Measures
taken:
Increasing public awareness
and health education are cost-effective
ways to efficiently and effectively utilize prevention and early detection of
hearing loss and aid appropriate referrals.
Measures like newborn and
infant screening at all levels of the health system. Promoting regular hearing check-ups and integrating hearing screening into
routine health care interventions are other crucial steps
towards a healthier population.
Assistive
technologies, including hearing aids, cochlear implants, closed captioning and
other devices can help people with
hearing loss at any age. People may also benefit from speech therapy, aural
rehabilitation and other related services.
How to
help them?
Face the hearing-impaired
person directly, on the same level and in good light whenever possible. Position yourself so that the light is shining on the
speaker's face, not in the eyes of the listener. Do not talk from another room.
Do contribute towards the theme of World Hearing Day 2024: 'changing mindsets: Let's make ear and hearing care
a reality for all.'
