RAGI- THE NUTRIENT PACKED WONDER GRAIN FOR A HEALTHIER YOU

Having a healthy breakfast brings in a lot of energy to sustain the whole busy day. My breakfast today was Ragi jaggery dosa (pancakes)
Yes, it is safe and beneficial to include ragi in our daily diet. Ragi is a nutritious whole grain rich in fibre, calcium and iron. Its gluten-free nature and low glycemic index make it suitable for regular consumption, promoting digestive health and overall well-being. The iron content in Ragi boosts hemoglobin levels, which especially helps people with anemia.
Coming to Ragi jaggery dosa, its easy to prepare and sweet &tasty to eat. Take two cups of ragi flour, one and half cup of powdered jaggery, add water and  prepare batter. Pour like dosa(pancakes) on a tava (pan)and eat it hot and sweet.
Make it a Sunday's special breakfast. Here is a list of benefits that ragi bestows on us:
Ragi is by itself is known to be very nutritious and an abundant source of vitamins and minerals so when this wonder grain is sprouted into the beautiful little plant it also naturally grows a vitamin that most vegetarians lack in and that is Vit B12.
Ragi is rich in calcium. It is said that no other plant source provides calcium the way ragi can. It also has vitamin D and, along with calcium, can help in improving bone strength. Consuming ragi is a good way to keep up the body calcium levels and can keep osteoporosis at bay.
Ragi is a very good source of natural Iron and its consumption helps in recovery of Anemia. The Ragi based foods are highly suited for expectant mothers and elderly due to there high calcium and iron content. Ragi consumption helps in relaxing body naturally.
Along with these qualities it is also rich in dietary fiber as compared to other grains. Thus ragi makes for a good diet product to add in your meals. It has a low fat content which being in its unsaturated form makes it the perfect for those trying to lose weight, shed the extra flab & achieve a fit & healthy body.
Now that you know the major benefits of ragi in diabetes, weight loss, asthma, cardiovascular diseases, cholesterol levels, digestion, anaemia, bone health and immunity, you should definitely include it in your daily diet.
It is important to keep in mind though, that the best time to consume ragi is in the morning, for being fiber-rich, its digestive process is more elaborate and it is usually not okay to eat ragi at night, especially for those with digestive problems and gluten allergies.
Because of this quality of ragi, people in rural areas  of Andhra Pradesh especially farmers consume ragi for breakfast with a dish  known as SANKATI in Telugu. The process of its preparation can be known here
Furthermore, people with indigestion, gas, or constipation conditions should also avoid Ragi as it takes a lot of time to digest. It is high in protein which can cause discomfort and indigestion.
Ragi may not be suitable for all , but make it a part of your diet if it fits you.
