There are many vegetables which we eat and every vegetable has got its own nutrients and aids in the proper function of the human body. Intake of vegetables on a regular basis has got numerous benefits.
Vegetables are majorly divided into two - green and root . Among the root vegetable YAM is a large sized vegetable. It is available through out the year. It is named as suran, karunaik-kizhangu, kandhagada and elephant foot yam etc.
Yam is a root vegetable that grows under the soil in form of a tuber and is a powerhouse of nutrition. Many keep away from it because of "itchy throat". But adding lemon juice reduce itchiness. It has
nutrients like vitamin B6, B1, riboflavin, folic acid, and niacin, it also contains a small amount of beta-carotene.
Yam provides phenomenal health benefits :
* Yam finely controls cough, ulcer, boils and other skin diseases.
* Yam is known for its anti-aging benefits that include beta carotene, vitamin C, B6 and antioxidants that help prevent wrinkles.
* Yam, as an excellent source of beta-carotene and vitamin A, helps improve the hair quality and growth too.
* Yam contains antioxidants that also have anti-inflammatory properties, thus good for those suffering from arthritis and asthma.
* The rich dietary fibre content present in yam reduces constipation and decreases bad cholesterol. It also aids in healthy digestion, due to potassium content and stimulates smooth bowel movements.
Try this traditional yam recipe - a low GI vegetable and enjoy its rich root flavour and taste. It is best prepared as curry, sambhar and chips. Include this in your diet, its health properties will add a touch to your nutritious diet regimen.
