Alliance Française has a foothold in Chennai since 1953 and works at fostering Indo-French mutual understanding through the development of languages and cultures. There are 13 Alliances Françaises in India (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Goa, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Pondicherry, Pune and Trivandrum).
Alliance Française of Madras is organizing “Semaine de la Francophonie 2022” with interesting programs which includes competitions, workshops and quizzes. Yesterday I have participated in the treasure hunt. It was an interesting game of finding books and authors in the AFM library. Let's know more about Francophone and francophonie countries:
What is Francophone?
A francophone country is a country where French is the main or official language.
Which are Francophonie countries?
There are 29 Francophonie countries. They are : Belgium, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Canada, Chad, the Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, France, Haiti, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Mali, Monaco, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Switzerland, Togo and Vanuatu.
The Week of the French language and Francophonie was created in 1995 on the initiative of the Ministry of Culture. It is organized every year around March 20, International Day of La Francophonie .
This event is a privileged moment of French-speaking community. Several events are organized in France and abroad each year.
Celebrating La Francophonie is recognizing the potential of language and culture to unite people, to create spaces of solidarity and mutual understanding, to reflect together on our common future. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) share this common vision that places culture and language at the heart of any lasting effort for peace and development.
