Religious scriptures state that on the last day of the fasting month of marghazi the wedding of Andal and Rangamannar (Lord Krishna) took place.  All the 30 sacred hymns sung by Andal a poetess of 9th   century is recited fully today in all temples.

She in her teachings directed people on this day to end all bad things, evil and hatred by lighting a camp fire and destroying all old and waste items. People put into fire old torn clothes, broom sticks,  mats and other un wanted things  there by leaving all clutters and erasing fight and  dis harmony and to make a fresh start with happy minds and ideas.

All temples perform Andal kalyanam on this day- The wedding of the Lord and Goddess Andal. It is very special in the temple town of Srivilliputthur in Tamilnadu – It is the birth place of Andal.
