A SHORT NOTE ON THE INVINCIBLE SHORT STORY ON THE NATIONAL SHORT STORY DAY

The Short story has firmly established itself as a favourite form in Modern Literature.

Edgar Allen Poe  defines  ''a short story is a prose narrative requiring from half an hour to one or two hours in its perusal.''

The first requirement of a short story is the subject of a story must be one that can be adequately and effectively developed within the prescribed limits.

The second requirement is the principle of composition thus comes to light- that of unity; under which head we include unity of motive, of purpose, of action, and in addition , unity of impression.

Provided that the elementary conditions which have been emphasised are fulfilled, a story may deal with any kind of motive and material.

In Washington Irving's  'The Stout Gentleman'  a whimsical fancy is worked out with admirable skill, and the very slightness of the substance is an element in the impression produced.

A dramatic incident or situation; a telling scene; a closely co-ordinated series of events; a phase of character; a bit of experience; an aspect of life; a moral problem- any one of these, and innumerable other motives which might be added to the list, may be made the nucleus of a thoroughly satisfactory story.

On National short story day (December 21st) today "Writers melon has asked to present a short story in 80 words with  a prompt in the form of  a picture. Try it here: ,https://twitter.com/Writersmelon/status/1473138668001021952
