Vellore in Tamil Nadu is well known for the tourist spots in and around the City. On the medical front Vellore is remembered for the world famous CMC- Christian Medical College. It has said to have cured many thousands of people from their disease and sufferings.
Vellore can be reached by road and rail from Chennai, Tirupathi and Chithoor. It has railway junction named "katpadi" where almost hundreds of long distance trains pass by every day.
In recent times Vellore had one more landmark in the name of Golden temple. (Sri Lakshmi Narayani Golden Temple)
Let us look into the six attractive tourist spots in and around the city:
Vellore fort : It is situated in the center of the city and is considered to b ethe traditional treasure house of Vellore. It is one of the important places to be visited. It is of 2500 feet long and 1500 feet wide. The compound is 30 feet high and 25 feet wide. The pond is 8000feet long and 1190 feet deep. Though the stone walls were not plastered, it is notable that they are still strong.
Vellore Amrithi Zoological park: This zoological park is situated at a distance of 25 kms away from Vellore at the foot of Thellai Javvadhu on one of the riversides of Amrithi river. It was established in 1967 in 25 acres of land. Here are number of birds and animals in the park which can make the kids happy. Also, plenty of herbs and sandal wood trees are grown here.
Javvadhu Ranges : It is on the eastern ghats. There are many sandal wood trees and fruit bearing trees. Jamana Mathur is the significant village among the famous Javvadhu ranges. Peedan Madavu waterfalls and kavalur observatory center are the naturally beautified spots.
Yelagiri Hills : From Vellore, Yelagiri is at a distance of 93 kms. It is a wonderful place to spend the holidays with joy and gaiety. It is at 920 meters above the sea level. There are 14 villages in Yelagiri hills, where tribes are living. They are engaged in horticultural afforestation and so forth. The distinguished life style and the rituals of these tribes attract attention of the tourists. The famous temple of Lord Muruga and herbarium are here. The zoo and children's park situated here is a place for kids to spend some time close to nature. Yelagiri Hills is called as "Ooty of the poor".
Jalgamparai Waterfalls : It is at the down hills of Yelagiri at 17 kms from Tirupattur. A separate cart -path is here to reach this water falls. A vel-shaped Lord Muruga idol is in the prominent Muruga temple. There are ample bus transports from Tirupattur to go the falls.
Kailasagiri: It is one of the most beautiful places of Vellore district. it is 10 kms from Ambur. There are many streams around Muruga temple which is on a small hill. A slightly degenerated fort belonging to Nawabs can be seen here from Kailasgiri. One can enjoy the beauty of the small town Umarabath where there is a very big Mosque and an Arabic college.
