8 POINTS ON DALIT LITERATURE

1. Mahatma Jyotirao Phule used the term "Dalit" for the first time in 1930.

2. The ''Dalit" literature is also called Fourth World Literature.

3. The term "Dalit literature came into use when the first conference of Maharastra Dalit Sahitya Sangh was held at Mumbai in 1958.

4. Baburao Bagul is  regarded as the pioneer of Dalit writings in Marathi .

5. Namdeo Dhasal is the founder of Dalit Panther

6. Baburao's Bagul's first collection of short stories Jevah Mi Jat Chorali (When I had concealed My caste) was published in 1963. The collection created a stir in Marathi literature with its passionate depiction of  a crude society and thus brought in a new momentum to Dalit literature in Marathi. Today it is seen by many critics as the epic of the Dalit's, and was later made into a film.

7. The Dalit Diary (1999) was written by Chandra Bhan Prasad.

8. Namdeo Dhasal- Marathi Dalit writer, was awarded the Padma Sri for Literature in 1999.
