· The wars of the Roses (1455-1485) had
a fatal effect on art and literature
· They distracted the country, wasted
its energy and destroyed noble families on whose patronage early literature and
art were dependent.
· The period following the death of
Chaucer was in the grip of wars, unrest, chaos and lawlessness.
· No writer of Genius was born during
these long years. It is perhaps note-
worthy that the 15th century was not in England an age of great men
in any field of activity.
· There was nobody to carry on the
Chaucerian tradition with any great credit.
· Another cause of bareness was the
deficiency of poetic understanding among the followers of Chaucer.
· The free movement of thought was
checked during this period.
· In 15th century, there was
little enough to inspire and much to repress literary genius.
