THE ART OF ARRANGING NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES AT HOME

Newspapers play a critical role in our society. It is one of the essential factors for shaping public opinion and disseminating information. Without newspapers, it would be nearly impossible to know what is going on in the world. Newspapers have been around for over 400 years and have changed the world.

The kind of engagement the newspaper encourages makes us better-informed citizens, voters, and community members. One of the most compelling reasons to keep newspapers in your information mix is the newspaper's unique ability to strengthen communities.

Can Old Newspapers Be Worth Money?

Maybe, but it's rare enough as to effectively be a “no”. Your best chance at getting serious money for them is if you have ones that are in the “century or more old” category. That means headlines about the Titanic, World War I,

STORING NEWSPAPERS AT HOME:

Newspapers should be stored flat, and protected within a rigid box or folder. Special newspaper-size boxes and enclosures are available from conservation suppliers. Added protection may be provided by interleaving the newsprint with thin sheets of alkaline buffered tissue, also available from conservation suppliers.

Clippings can be stored upright or flat in folders and boxes. Do not intermingle newspaper clippings with letters, photographs, or other documents since the impurities in the newsprint will cause staining in adjacent materials.

Place each newspaper flat in a primary enclosure such as a polyester sleeve or paper folder. Label the folder with acid-free labels or a no. 2 pencil. Place the folders in a buffered, acid- and lignin-free storage box with a deep lid to block out light and dust.

According to the Alabama Department of Archives & History, “If you really want to display the original, it should be framed using acid-free backing board and kept away from windows. The frame should have special glass that blocks harmful ultraviolet (UV) light.”

Reuse old papers to line your cabinet, dresser, pantry or bathroom shelves. They're cheaper than shop-bought shelf liners, and they're easy to put in and replace. Place sheets of paper in the bottom of your cat's box, under the litter. You'll save on litter, and any odors and wetness will be absorbed.

Why not treat your magazines like books?

Long, shallow shelves work great for stacking neat piles amid small, eye-catching decorations. Find some vintage or decorative bookends to keep them from flopping over.

Thin out your magazine collection, first and foremost. Put the remaining collection into holders (lucite, black, or white are great options), and arrange them on shelves.

Another option is artful stacks, but keep them neat and looking purposeful, not messy and strewn about.

Finally, if you don’t need any of the newspapers and magazines, go to Scrap Uncle.

Scrap Uncle is an online junk-picking platform that provides doorstep services to households, and industries to sell newspapers, old items, and scrap materials. Scrap Uncle not only deals with the collection of newspapers or old scrap materials but also accepts aluminum and copper scrap.
