Art, particularly Literature, is the mirror of the society. The changes that take place in a society lead to a remarkable transformation in literary themes and thus the freshness of literature never dulls.
Indo- Anglian literature refers to the body of work by writers in India who write in the English language and whose native or co- native language could be one of the numerous languages of India.
At the early stage of its development Tagore's works often focused on the struggles of women and girls in traditional Indian society. The literary portrayal of women in Tagore's works tally with their actual condition in that era.
MulkRajAnand's women characters are traditional, confined and apostles of love and warmth.
Bhabani Bhattacharya is also successful in portraying powerful woman characters. His novels depict different types of alienated woman characters, whos seem to be at war with both the self and the society.
A new generation of women novelists, embracing the changed values, emerged in the recent past. An effort to re define the man -woman relationships can be seen in the novels of Bharati Mukherjee, Nayantara Sahgal, Uma Vasudev, Arundhati Roy, Githa Hariharan, Shashi Deshpande, Shobha De and others.
The word "New Woman" has come to signify an awakened woman trying to assert her rights as a human being and determined to fight for equal treatment with man.
Anita Desai's CLEAR LIGHT DAY-1980, Jaishree Misra's ANCIENT PROMISES-2000, Manju Kapoor's DIFFICULT DAUGHTERS, in these the authors portrayed women characters with a voice of their own, a voice that had been suppressed for centuries.
Tradition, transition and modernity are the various stages through which the image of woman in Indo- Anglian Literature has passed. Modern Indian English novelists, both men and women, try to conform to the new social roles of women. The latest development in Indian women's writing is really praiseworthy. Recent writers' stories realize both the diversity of women and the diversity within each woman. Instead of limiting the lives of women to one ideal, they push the ideal towards the full expression of each woman's potential.
