A GARDEN SO RICH

Child rearing is a tough and challenging  proposition which involves patience, commitment and care. This message is driven home through the simple and lucid account of how to tend a garden.

Garden fills lives with special richness as they are living reminder  of the beauty of the world. Parenting and gardening do have a lot in common. In order to raise a child into a mature individual with a healthy personality, parents have to foster good values and habits, right from a very early age. Instilling qualities such as patience and tolerance is extremely important in increasingly multicultural societies. These virtuous qualities can be developed through simple activities such as gardening, or any other hobby or activity.

Parent child bonding teaches children the value of relationships and how to build stable and mature relationships in their own personal lives. Like wise, for a plant to yield healthy fruits and flowers,  a combination of factors is required- the right soil with rich nutrients, adequate amount of water, sunlight, favourable weather conditions and a lot of care.

This short sketch  A GARDEN SO RICH by CHRISTIE CRAIG is written from the view point of  a woman watching and observing her husband and son trying hard to grow a few plants in their small garden during spring. She id delighted to see them work together happily in their enchanted place, which, in her opinion, is  avital aspect of parenting. She refrains from joining them as she is afraid that she might spoil the fun. Gradually, the garden begins to thrive and to flourish and in the process, one learns valuable lessons that are important for life.  Qualities such as pride, patience and tolerance can be learnt or cultivated while one tends a garden. Besides, the father and the son were getting to spend quality time with each other and enjoying the experience to the utmost.  The narrator observes that their garden not only bore many fruits and vegetables but healthier relationships and fond memories too. Happiness can be derived from mundane and simple experience of every day life.

"A GARDEN SO RICH" celebrates the magic act of gardening, the feeling of satisfaction that comes from creating something out of nothing, the physical and spiritual renewal the earth provides and the special moments shared with one another which only nature can bestow.

  1. There is similarity between raising our children and growing plants. They both need care, attention and nurturing. Seems the same analogy is shown here.
