THE STORY OF EVERYDAY COFFEE

IT’S WORLD COFFEE DAY TODAY, LETS TALK ABOUT COFFEE

Coffee is a non-alcoholic beverage consumed with or without milk. In Chennai coffee has got a different dimension when compared to the rest of India. It’s the best morning only when we have hot filter coffee, either it being a hot summer morning or cold winter morning. A hot cup of coffee is a stimulant and energiser for the whole day.

Nowadays lot of brands supply coffee powder, one is instant and the other Brewed coffee, for which a hot water is poured over the coffee powder placed in the stainless steel filter. The decoction is collected in the bottom of the filter and then it is mixed with hot milk , little sugar for some , and many without sugar consume it in  stainless steel or Brass or silver tumbler with saucer (here it is called in Tamil as Dabara Tumbler) These days porcelain coffee mugs are used. This is the simple and the routine methods of consuming coffee with regard to Chennaities. The filters used in traditional household are made of brass. Now these are replaced with coffee makers. Even few brands supply readymade decoctions too. Few people are now getting into black coffees.

Have you ever visited a coffee estate? It’s a superb feel to feel the fragrance of the coffee all around us.

The tall coffee plantations near Visakahapatnam (Andhra Pradesh)  https://arakuresorts.in/coffee-plantation.html is the only one till now I remember of coffee plantations.  It was an enriching aroma all around with full of coffee trees.

The coffee board gave us few sample packets of coffee seeds.  There are many number of variety of seeds with minor differences in features and qualities. We carried back home those seeds and seamless thoughts and memories of time we spent in the coffee plantation. We spent a night at their guest house. And it was a full moon of May 2001. Amazing view of moon and the surroundings too added magical effects. Like these our coffee memories are strong and fulfilling.

Back home we found a store to grind those seeds. The store accepted to do us the favour, actually they grind only a particular brand or flavour, the ratio of chicory difference has a larger impact on the coffee powder, in turn coffee’s colour, consistency and taste do differ. They roasted the seeds that created a fragrance, as if coffee is ready to drink.

In the village my grandmother had a small machine in her house to grind coffee seeds which was fixed to the wall.  Every day she will roast a handful of coffee seeds in a wok, and the she will grind it in the machine. Coffee powder is ready. Then the decoction is prepared.

And then everyone is served with hot super coffee.

That’s our coffee story, if you have one such, do share it in comments

If u had made a trip to a coffee estate include about it too.
