There’s a charm in frying
something at home and enjoying it right away. Sweet potato chips are one of
those little joys. Believe me, the ones you fry fresh in your kitchen are
tastier than anything you’ll find outside. They’re crisp, crunchy, and somehow
feel more comforting than a bowl of sweet potato curry or sambhar.
At home, we often pair these chips
with plain rice and dal. They brighten up the plate instantly. Some days, they
don’t even make it to the dining table – we start munching them straight from
the paper towel where they’re cooling!
How I make them
I usually take two medium sweet
potatoes, peel them, and slice them nice and thin. A quick soak in cold water
helps remove the starch, and then I pat them dry. Hot oil does the magic – the
slices curl, turn golden, and fill the kitchen with that irresistible fried
aroma. Once out, a simple sprinkle of salt is enough, but sometimes I add a
pinch of chili powder or pepper if I’m in the mood.
Why I love them
They’re not just a snack – they
feel like a memory. Something about sitting with a plate of hot rice, dal, and
these crisp chips makes the meal extra special. And when there’s a rainy
afternoon or a lazy weekend, these chips with a cup of tea feel like the
perfect treat.
Homemade sweet potato chips don’t
ask for much, but they give back a lot – taste, warmth, and a little crunch of
happiness.
Here is the recipe :
Ingredients
2 medium-sized sweet potatoes
Oil for deep frying
Salt to taste
A pinch of red chili powder or
black pepper (optional)
Method
Wash and peel the sweet potatoes.
Slice them thin and even (a slicer
works best).
Soak the slices in cold water for
10–15 minutes to remove excess starch.
Pat them dry completely with a
kitchen towel.
Heat oil in a deep pan. Once hot,
add the slices in small batches.
Fry until golden and crisp.
Remove onto tissue paper to drain
excess oil.
Sprinkle salt (and chili
powder/pepper if you like a kick).
Serving Ideas
Serve hot with steamed rice and
dal as a crunchy side dish.
Enjoy them on their own with tea
or coffee.
Store in an airtight container for
a few days of munching.
Homemade sweet potato chips are
simple, quick, and full of flavor. Once you try them, you’ll never feel like
buying packed chips again!
