Compliments have a special way of
lifting our spirits. They surprise us, delight us, and, most importantly, make
us feel seen. Over the years, I’ve received a few that I cherish—one about my
complexion, another about the way I choose the colours of my sarees. But
there’s one compliment that has stayed with me more than the rest.
It came from a respected elder in
our extended family. At a wedding, in front of many members from my in-laws’
side, he introduced me to his sister by saying, “She’s the only lady in the
family who doesn’t raise her voice.” I was stunned—pleasantly so. It wasn’t
something I expected anyone to notice, let alone appreciate publicly.
I do try to remain calm,
especially during family discussions, disagreements, or tense moments. I’ve always
believed that not every situation needs a loud reaction. That small moment of
recognition, however, gave me more confidence in this quiet approach. In family
matters, emotions can run high, and it’s easy to be swept away by anger or
frustration. But staying composed often brings more clarity and resolution than
raising our voices ever can.
That one compliment reminds me,
even today, of the power of calmness. It’s not always easy, but it’s always
worth it. And maybe, just maybe, being noticed for such a trait is more
meaningful than we think.
