Every year on January 18, National Thesaurus Day is celebrated in honor of Peter Mark Roget, the author of Roget's Thesaurus, born in 1779. The day also recognizes the importance of thesauruses and their practical use.

Roget was a successful medical professional who retired in 1840 to work on his thesaurus.

He spent decades collecting and categorizing words to create the first modern thesaurus.

His thesaurus, Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases Classified and Arranged, was published in 1852.
