A LIGHT READ ON POEMS OF OCCASION

     

 


Poems of occasion, also known as occasional poetry or occasional verse, are poems written to commemorate or comment on a special event. They can be serious or light and are often intended to be read or performed in public. 

Examples of occasions 

Weddings, Funerals, Anniversaries, Births, Military or sporting victories, Scientific achievements, Foundings, and Dedications.

Poems of occasion are poems written to commemorate or comment on a specific event or anniversary. 

Examples of occasional poems

1.     The Charge of the Light Brigade: By Alfred, Lord Tennyson, this poem commemorates the Crimean War 

2.     Of Late: By George Starbuck, this poem was written after reading about a Vietnam War protester's suicide 

3.     Praise Song for the Day: By Elizabeth Alexander, this poem was written for the inauguration of President Barack Obama 

4.     I Carry Your Heart With Me: By EE Cummings, this poem is a classic wedding poem
