WORSHIP LORD VISHNU AS VAMANA IN THIS TEMPLE

The Divya kshetram TIRUNILAATTINGAL TUNDAM is a small shrine within the inner prakaram of Sri Ekambareswarar temple in Kanchipuram.

The presiding deity is Nilaattingal Tundattan also called Chandrachooda perumal in a standing posture. The Goddess is Nilattingal Tundattaayar. The sacred water is Chandra Pushkarini and the sanctum sanctorum is Purushasookta Vimanam.

According to the sthala purana, Shiva tested parvathi's commitment in performing Tapas by setting fire to the mango tree under which she was seated. Parvathi prayed to her brother Lord Vishnu, who caused waves of nectar to cool down the scorching rays. Lord Vishnu as Vamana continues to stay at this kshetram at the request of Parvati. It is also believed that at the request of Lord Vishnu the moon adorning Shiva alleviated the discomfort of heat that emanated during the churning of the milky ocean.  Hence, the name, Nilaa-tingal Tundattan.
