AN ANCIENT TEMPLE CONSTRUCTED WITH THE DONATED GOLD COW

The Divya kshetram TIRU SEMPONSEI KOYIL is located in Tirunangur 8 Kms from Sirkazhi in Tamil Nadu. This is one of the 11 Divya shetrams of Tirumangai Azhwar.

The presiding deity is Perarulaalan in a standing posture, and the Thayar is Alli Maamalar Nachiyaar. The scared water is Hema Pushkarini and the sanctum sanctorum is Kanaka Vimanam.

As per the sthala purana it is said that Lord Rama on his return after vanquishing Ravana stayed at the hermitage of Dridanetramuni. As per the muni’s advice Lord Rama made a cow of gold and donated it to a poor devotee. The devotee used the gold for the construction of the temple in this kshetram, hence the name sempon (pure gold) sei  kovil.
