SUBHASHIT - A ORIYA POEM

The  above poem - SUBHASHIT was written by poet Jagannatha Das in Oriya. He is a best known poet in the medieval age  who created an epic Oriya version of the celebrated Sanskrit classic Bhagavata.

Jagannath Das in his life span of six decades (1490-1550) wrote a considerable number of books on religion among all his writings. Oriya Bhagavata is the most important . In this  noble book he incorporated the basic ideas found in the Vedas, Upanishads, Sankhya Darshan and the Gita. There is scarcely any Oriya home where it has not been known, listened to, read and recited.

Many contemporary writers and writers from following generations also have been deeply influenced by this work. Many Kavyas, poems, lyrics, plays, including verse plays have been written on the themes taken from the Oriya Bhagavata. Many Sanghita's, bhajans, Janas and Chaupadis have been composed in imitation of some of the lines from the book.

Though by definition, Jagannatha Das's Bhagavata  is an Oriya version of the celebrated Sanskrit classic by the same name, for Oriya's it is not only a literary classic but much more.
