CELEBRATING WORLD CHESS DAY

Garry Kasparov is  synonymous with the game and we as Indian spontaneously spell the name VISHWA NATH ANAND when we talk about the game chess.

Today is the International Day of Chess  celebrated every year on July 20. It is an official day of the United Nations, established in honor of the ancient game of chess.

This was created by UNESCO to mark the founding of FIDE, the global body that governs chess' rules, federations and various tournaments. Today, July 20, 2023, is FIDE's 99th birthday.
The history of chess can be traced back nearly 1,500 years to its earliest known predecessor, called chaturanga, in India; its prehistory is the subject of speculation. From India it spread to Persia.
Chess training and practice supports the development of higher-order thinking skills—like problem solving, decision making, critical thinking, planning, and even creative thinking. Chess training and practice also helps improve general cognitive ability and scholastic achievement—especially in mathematics.
Chess helps build individual friendships and teaches children about sportsmanship. Children learn how to win graciously, and more importantly, how not to give up when encountering defeat. Chess encourages and rewards hard work. Children learn that those who practice and study the strategies win more games.
Author Allan Rufus said “Life is like a game of chess. To win you have to make a move. Knowing which move to make comes with insight and knowledge, and by learning the lessons that are accumulated along the way. We become each and every piece within the game called life.”
Chess has been around for more than 1,000 years and is one of the oldest board games still played today! A great way to celebrate this special day is to look back and learn more about chess history through the lens of the game's World Champions.
In fact, some of the best schools and colleges around the world recommend this game to help their students develop various skills such as logical thinking, abstract reasoning and spatial intelligence.
Do make your children to play, learn and enjoy the game of chess.

  1. Chess can be a beneficial and valuable addition to students learning. I feel it should be added to school curriculums.
