"What's Inclusive?"
"It means people who are
different in any way - different from most of the other people, what is called
the majority - should not be made to feel different. In any way. In the way we
see them or treat them or in the way we do things for them."
The theme of inclusivity is
well treated in this book - MUNNI MONSTER by Madhurima Vidyarthi. She is an
endocrinologist who always wanted to be a writer. This is her second book, but
she is planning to write many more.
Tanvi Bhat is a children's
book illustrator and author who has created books for renowned publishers.
Her illustrations in this book go hand in hand with the writings of the author.
Though they are in black and white, they are striking.
The author has taken great
efforts to bring in the theme of inclusivity with a delicate and sensitive
plot with a ten year old girl child as the protagonist. The
expectations, possessiveness, comfort zone of the children in those age groups
are elaborately discussed in this book. The role of parents & other family
members, financial issues are into the plot which makes it related to
every household.
The way to deal with children
the issues like cooperation, care, adjustments and bonding are all put forth in
a smooth and normal style which will make it easy for every parent to implement
the same. At the same time the author carries forward the story with true
reactions of a child when she needs to compromise and share her things.
The book also provides the needed
message to children to prioritize family than money. I quote "Love and
laughter, Mishti," Baba said, "a family and a house - needs Love and
laughter, more than they need money."
In the afterward author shares
about her experience with a person with cerebral palsy along with references
for the data provided. The book also holds in itself the list of organisations
working with cerebral palsy.
The author should be duly
credited for the bringing in the idea of “good wishing” and encouraging children
to develop the habit which will surely help them in the long run. The book
strongly features about the patience required for parents in handling children
during the tough times. It also explains the necessity to clarify the doubts of
the children and suggests to brief the situation with children rather than to
hide or distract them.
This is a fine book on
inclusivity elucidating the need for good parenting, teaching children about
diversity and inclusivity from the childhood there by moulding them into
responsible adults. The way Mishti starts to understand and feel for Munni whom
she initially thought as MONSTER is the transformation that bloomed from love,
care and the role model parents is definite to inspire many and would lead to a
better society.
Though this is a children’s
book, it has got a lot of information for adults too. Do grab a copy of the
book and read it along with your child.
