What is the secret of your success? is the general question to a successful person. Here the book THE SECRET OF PLANTS IN THE ENVIRONMENT answers from a plants perspective. How plants are surviving amidst hardships?
The book THE SECRET OF PLANTS IN THE ENVIRONMENT by Rishikesh Upadhyay is a mirror reflecting both the good and bad of plant life. The book will be most interesting to Environmentalists, botanists, research scholars and students in this field.
The book definitely contributes a lot to some of the contemporary debates going on with regard to environmental issues. It stands out due to its thorough research and perfect explanations of the Author. The real triumph of the book lies in its exhaustive references and suggested readings. The authors dedication and commitment towards the book can be gauged by the way it is structured.
Dr Rishikhesh Upadhyay is currently an assistant professor of plant environmental physiology and bio chemistry at Haflong Government college, Assam. Haflong is the only hill station of the state. He is the author of numerous scientific articles and books in the fields of plant environmental physiology and environmental stressors response in plants. Dr. Upadhyay is a recipient of many prestigious fellowships and awards. Much of his research work is confined to teaching and researching physio-biochemical and environmental stress responses in plants.
Starting from the prologue every chapter opens with a quote related to plants. It's a quite admirable effort. There are about 17 chapters in the book, which finely throws light on the way the plants cope up with the ups and downs in the environment.
The book magnanimously puts forth and brings to the notice of all the humans about the environmental changes and its impact on plants. Not only humans feel stress, even plants too undergo such stress and face its consequences.
In the life of a plant the role of proteins and hormones are vital for their survival, their imbalance due to un foreseen circumstances in the environment create life threats. How plants overcome these types of challenges ? The book holds the answer with key points from various research works. The author himself has cited two of his major publications in research journals. One being in Brazillian journal of Botany about METAL STRESS IN PLANTS:ITS DETOXIFICATION IN NATURAL ENVIRONMENT and other one in Israel journal of plant science about PLANT-RHIZOBACTERIA INTERACTION; PHYSIOLOGICAL IMPLICATION FOR HEAVY METAL STRESS IN PLANTS
For a plant to yield healthy fruits and flowers, a combination of factors is required- the right soil with rich nutrients, adequate amount of water, sunlight, favourable weather conditions and the treatment of seeds with magnetic field. etc. The influence of magnetic field has a positive effect on plants without adversely affecting the environment. From page 60 of the book I quote "several studies on the influence of magnetic fields on seeds and plants over many years have suggested that they lead to better plant growth and yield than chemical fertilisers and contribute to the improvement of crop productivity and protection.
The Author expresses his deep concern for farmers I quote from page 106, "Many farmers do not realise that a site is waterlogged untill water appears on the soil surface. However by this stage, plant roots may already be damaged and the yield potential may be severely affected." Proper drainage system should be put into place to avoid such loss.
''Land is not merely a soil, it is a fountain of energy flowing through a circuit of soils, plants and animals. - Aldo Leopold
Its our duty to protect and preserve the energy. This book contributes a lot towards bringing in the awareness about the various conditions in which a plant is being subjected to internal and external pressures caused by environment for which humans are partially responsible. So, it is in the hands of the humans to save plants, save earth and save nature.
(Received a copy of the book from the author in return to a honest review)

I agree that humans are partially responsible for the problems caused in the environment and they can only correct it.
