12 POINTS TO CHECK BEFORE POLISH

The surface of the wooden article has to be prepared before new finish or polish is applied. Look out for the issues before the process :

Scratch Marks :  scratches can be treated by the following ways : 1. Rub the scratches with a commercial remover. 2. Rub oil colour into it and when dry cover with varnish. 3.Mix oil colour with varnish and apply.

Slight spills and burnt marks: Rub with a rag moistened with a drop or two of liquid metal polish or methylated spirit and then re-polish or rub with a very fine abrasive

Dents: Small dents can be over come by steaming a damp cloth over the dents with a hot iron.

Cracks and Holes:  Apply putty using a flattened knife or spatula. When dry, smooth it with fine steel wool or very fine sand paper. Varnish the patch

Ink stain : Mop up as quickly as possible. Rub with fine dry steel wool or glass paper or dab with a hot solution of weak acid and rinse. In both cases colour and polish may darken, later apply polish and buff well.

Alcohol:  wipe with few drops of ammonia on damp cloth and rub immediately

Oil and Grease:  Pour kerosene and let it soak for short while. Wipe and dry. Wash with soap solution. Rinse and dry.

Rust: Rub with steel wool dipped in warm soap solution. Rinse & dry.

Paint: Use oleic acid solution or tri sodium phosphate. One pound is used in one gallon of water.

Gum: Remove gum from the wooden surface with a knife and rinse

Wax: A wax finish may be applied to new wood. It creates resistance to heat, water and alcohol, but will bring out the figure of the wood. Imparts a smooth feel. It can be maintained  by rubbing well, when dusting & polishing periodically.

Oil: A mixture of raw linseed oil and white spirit is rubbed well into the stained and filled wood. The finish has a slight darkening effect, provides a little protection and brings out the natural form. It is frequently used for teak and can be renovated easily. It is maintained by dusting and very occasionally rubbing in boiled linseed oil.
