1. As a river enters the sea it suddenly slows down. Its capacity for carrying sediment decreases and it may drop part of its sediment load in a huge fan of alluvial deposits called a delta.
2. Often the river splits up into many smaller branches called distributaries.
3. 3 main types of delta are: Bird's foot (Mississippi), Arcuate (Nile), Modified Cupsate (Niger)
