These may be the few professions which women
pursue in the urban space or at cities. What about the women in rural areas? What sort
of work force are they? Let’s take a look at the jobs the women handle in the
rural world & how they support their family in prosperity & stand financially
independent?
Milkmaids: History stands as a
testimony to this profession of women. “KRISHNACULT” is the biggest example for
women working in this sector. In dairies, women constitute about 90% of the
marginalized workers with some regional variations. Dairying at the household
level is largely in the domain of the women. This is a part of operational
flood {OF} programme.
Farmers: This is also one of
the oldest practices in India, that women are important in planting the sprouts.{
NAATRU- NADAAL in tamil} Agriculture employs largest percentage of women than
any industry. For plucking tea leaves also women are most suitable.

Weavers: women has a special place in weaving industry,
let it be saree weaving or weaving baskets. In India there is no shortage for
varieties, either it can be silk or cotton, north or south, women display extraordinary
Creativity in saree design &patterns.
Bamboo & cane basket weaving
takes extra time & energy than wire baskets. Women of north- east excel in
this craft. Women have a good hand at carpet weaving too.
Tailors: women are taught tailoring
from an early age itself. Stitching &Sewing fetches them a
good deal of income. Many are employed in apparel companies.
Apart from stitching clothes, women stitch
leaves together to make it as a plate for consuming food. This practice is highly
employed in southern India.
Potters: women under take this work with lot of care &
attention. Mud pots for cooking & gardening
are made in different sizes & shapes. Now -a -Days painted pots are also
available.
Women work as priest in temples.
Many women vendors sell & supply large quantities of vegetables in village Fairs.
Many women in villages are panchayat heads, Grama sevikas, post women,
Teachers & Midwife.
With many self- help groups emerging, women work in batches &
shifts in their skilled spots.
Though this much of change is welcomed, still many women go out into
forest for cutting firewood, many go a long way to get clean drinking water. Women
in many cases along with children go for labour work in construction activities
& as daily wages in match box factories & crackers manufacturing units.
All these women too should get relieved from the tangle.
All my weekly blog post on Monday's of this month of March carried articles of women or about women as a way of celebrating International women's day. It's my way........
