WHY WORLD RIVERS DAY IS VITAL?

This global event highlights the importance of rivers, ecosystems, and communities worldwide. The day serves as a reminder of the crucial role rivers play in sustaining life by providing fresh water, supporting biodiversity, and maintaining the balance of natural habitats.

THEME:

The theme for World Rivers Day 2024 is "Waterways of Life". This theme underscores the essential role rivers play in supporting ecosystems, wildlife, agriculture, and human communities.

World Rivers Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of September every year to increase public awareness about rivers and to encourage their conservation. The day celebrates Earth's waterways, in which over 60 countries participate every year.

RIVERS IN INDIA:

There are 8 major river systems in India, with more than 400 rivers in total. Rivers play an important role in the lives of the Indian people due to their crucial importance in sustenance and their place in Indian religions.

One of the interesting fact about a river in India: The Umngot River in Meghalaya is considered one of the cleanest rivers in India and the world. It flows through Mawlynnong village, which is known as "Asia's Cleanest Village". 

TOWARDS CONSERVATION:

River water conservation is a planned activity connected with various habitat features and outlines how to conserve all river water spread across the world. The restoration and conservation of river water must be of the highest priority for sustaining humanity and ecology for the present and future generations.

STEP INTO ACTION:

Do not block/ stop natural drains by constructing on drains or dumping wastes—plant flora in Lakes or Rivers. If you live in an area where a lake or river is present, you might want to think about planting some local plants near the water. Trees are also helpful.

Do Not Litter near a water body such as a lake, river, or sea—plant trees in catchment areas of rivers and also on banks. Trees check soil erosion retain soil moisture and feed rivers to keep them flowing.
