MANGING SUMMER WITHOUT AC

Summer is at its peak and heat waves are increasing day by day making AC compulsory. But still, many are without ACs.

WILL IT BE FINE TO BE WITHOUT AC?

If you're looking to save money on your energy bill and reduce your carbon footprint, turning off your AC during the hottest parts of the day can be a good option. However, if you're concerned about your home becoming too hot and humid, it's probably best to leave your AC on.

HOW TO MANAGE WITHOUT AC?

Putting a fan in a window to push hot air outside is a good way to keep your home cool. If you don't have a fan, you can open some windows.

If the air outside feels cooler than inside, open the windows and try to get air flowing through the home. Otherwise, keep doors and windows closed when temperatures are at their peak. Use a fan to help circulate the air. Remember, fans don't always help if the humidity is high.

THOSE DAYS WITHOUT ACs :

·         Kept windows and doors shut at midday to keep hot air out.

·         Delayed cooking, baking, and kitchen chores until the cooler evening hours.

·          Opened windows at bedtime to let in the cool nighttime air.

·         Blew fans across blocks of ice

ANCIENT TECHNICS TO BEAT THE HEAT:

People in those days created natural ventilation within buildings to keep them cool inside. They also used an evaporative cooling method by hanging wet reed mats over doorways and windows.

Architecture played a big role in keeping homes cool. By creating archways, large windows, and high ceilings, builders could funnel in outdoor breezes and create cross-ventilation. Porches built in the shade also gave people an area to cool off during the evening.

You may have noticed that older buildings tend to have much higher ceilings: this allowed heat to rise so that inhabitants could enjoy the cooler space below. Deep eaves and porches protected windows from the heat of the sun, and it was common to plant trees on the east and west sides of a house for additional shade.

SURVIVING IN THE SUMMER :

Have milk-based drinks like lassi, a yogurt beverage popular in the summertime, and buttermilk. The key is to drink plenty of fluids to replenish the electrolytes lost in sweat and keep your body hydrated.

Keep cool with fans, wear light and loose-fitting clothing, and keep skin wet, using a spray bottle or damp sponge and by taking cool showers. Stay hydrated: during days of extreme heat, keep drinking water before you feel thirsty, especially if outdoors or performing physical activity.
