YERCAUD - EASTERN GHATS HILL STATION
Located at a height of 1515 meters, its spectacular visual beauty and good
weather pulls in many people. Yercaud is fastly gaining popularity amongst the
locals and foreign tourists. Yercaud is famous for its lush green
meadows and stunning views of the hills.
HOW IT GET ITS NAME?
The paradisiacal hill station of Yercaud, which is the sought-after destination of many tourists, is in Tamil Nadu's Salem district. 'Yer' means lake in Tamil and as the name suggests a breathtaking lake amidst the hills awaits visitors to Yercaud.
Due to the growth of a large number of trees around its main lake, the locals started calling the place 'Yeri-Kaadu', which literally translates into lake forest. Over the years, both words merged to make the name Yercaud. Yercaud is spread across an area of about 383 sq km, which includes its reserve forests.
IMPORTANCE OF THE PLACE:
Yercaud served as a summer retreat to British officers and commanders who lived in India and now it is a favorite summer getaway for Bangaloreans. Lady's Seat derives its name from the belief that British women used to spend their evenings watching the mesmerizing views and sunset from this rock.
BEST TIME TO VISIT:
The period from October to June is considered the best
time to visit Yercaud. This is because the weather gets quite chilly towards
the end of the year and this can be a welcome relief from the heat and
pollution of city life.

Yercaud Lake is a natural lake in the center of the town where there are boating facilities. Other places of interest include the deer park, Bears Cave, Kiliyur falls, Rose Garden, various viewpoints, and temples including Servarayan temple, Raja Rajeswari temple, and Rama temple at Pagoda Point.
From fruit orchards to coffee plantations, spice groves to orange orchards – there is a lot to explore. Tourists who visit Yercaud also tour the Yercaud Lake, Anna Park, and Lady's Seat – these are some of the popular sightseeing haunts at the hill station.
Shevaroy temple is the highest point in Yercaud and is located near to the Shevaroy mines. It's inside a small cave, the entrance is narrow but once you enter inside you can stand properly.
The most alluring aspect of Yercaud is its big yet natural lake very popularly known as the Emerald Lake. Surrounded by some wonderful cloud-peaked hills and a well-persevered garden on its banks, this lake is a feast for the eyes.
