Visiting a temple on the New Year day, is a ritual followed by most of the people of Tamilnadu.
It is believed that when you offer prayer to the Lord on this day you will be blessed for an year.

Every temple in the state is decorated with all varieties of flowers and lights.
Special pooja and darshan is started from.the 12 am on this day. Harathi & chanting makes the start of the day. Sometimes it lasts till 12pm.
Next to this, one more ritual followed on this day is that family that stays together on this day, stays together for ever.
So, family members try to be at one place all together and celebrate the Start of the New year and pray to be together always.
Sending gifts and cash to loved ones is the third ritual adhered by the elders. It is a belief that sharing , charity and helping others should be done as a first good job on this day.
Like this all the rituals are for a reason and every thing brings in a lot of happiness and prosperity.
