COMMONLY USED FOREIGN WORDS AND PHRASES

 


Words give life to our thoughts. There are countless words in English language. But at times many use foreign words and phrases in between their writings and speech. Here are a few words  from French, Latin, Spanish ,Japanese and Italian words with English meanings that are normally used by many. Knowing its English meaning will surely aid us to understand better and in right place even we will be comfortable to use it.

FRENCH WORDS AND PHRASES :

1. Avant garde - describes artist and writers who are unorthodox and untraditional

2. Coup d' etat - an unexpected action

3. Deja vu - sense of having undergone

4. En passant - by the way

5. Faux pas -  a social error

6. Laissez Faire - policy of non - interference

LATIN WORDS AND PHRASES :

5. de facto - functioning in reality

6. ex gratia - payment made as favour

7. in toto - completely

8. magnum opus - crowning achievement

9. prima facie - on first appearance

13. vox populi - public opinion

SPANISH WORDS:

1. Bonanza - a huge profit

JAPANESE WORDS:

2. haiku - a form of Japanese poetry

3. ikebana - flower arrangement

4. kimono - long, loose robe tied with sash

5. samurai - warrior

6. Sumo - form of wrestling

ITALIAN WORDS:

2. embroglio - violent, embarrassing quarrel
