Portmanteau words are a combination of two or more words to form new words. They are distinguished from contractions as in don't (do + not) and compounds as in starfish (star+ fish) .
Many new words which are blends of existing words, have become part of the lexicon and are therefore considered standard English.
These creative and inventive components, which have two meanings packed into one word, not only represent dual ideas but also have become part of mainstream vocabulary.
Examples :
smog - smoke + fog
wurly - wavy + curly
Wikipedia - wiki + encyclopedia
theosophical - theology + philosophical
microsoft - microcomputer + software
