ANCIENT MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

“Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.” – Confucius.

Music can be defined as the artistic organisation of sounds or tones that expresses ideas and emotions through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony and tonal colour. Music can be divided into genres and sub-genres. Music is performed with vast range of instruments and vocal techniques. Instruments like violin, mrudangam, ghatam, kanjira, veena, morsing, flute are used as accompaniments during carnatic music vocal concert. Solo performances are also done with these instruments.

Musical instruments are the ones that produce musical sounds, which is melodious to listen to. According to Yajur veda, the ancient musical instruments are

वीणावेणुमृदङ्गाः I

Veena venu Mrudangam are considered as the first evolved musical instruments. The flute in the hands of Lord Krishna, Veena in the hands of Goddess Saraswathi and Mrudangam in the hands of Nandi bhagavan, symbolises their origin and they are the exponents in playing the said instruments. These Gods and Goddess are worshipped to gain excellence in instrumental rendition.

Listening to flute music is pleasing and I love listening to it. Understanding of the ragas help to enjoy the presentation much better. For a Flutist, control over breath, speed, voice and intuitive grasp all contribute to the good presentation. Ragas like Begada and Harikambhoji are my favourites.

In Veena 24 frets and 7 strings, makes the music flow. From the past two years I’m learning to play veena. Holding veena itself requires much practice so as to feel comfortable while playing. Fingering & concentration is highly essential through out the process of learning. In depth knowledge in classical music will be an added advantage.
