Karthigai Deepam is a
festival celebrated in South India in the Tamil month of Karthigai which starts
from November 15th and ends by December 15th of English calendar
This festival is celebrated
on the full moon day of this month. This year 2019, this festival falls on
Thursday the 12th December.
On this day lamps are lit all around the
house. The earthen lamps, sliver lamps and brass lamps were also used.
Lamps are placed on a
colourful rangoli drawn at the entrance of the house. This three day festival is a
prayer to God to always make our lives bright and keep us away from
darkness. On the first day, lamps are placed in all rooms in the house.
On the second day it is meant for the back
yard of the house like, well, water tank and other water resources. At these
places lamps are lit.
On the third day it is
for waste in the house, yes, waste! May be our ancestors considered that wealth
can be obtained from waste. So, the lamps are placed around dustbins and garbage.
Sweets are prepared
using jaggery along with puffed rice, poha and groundnuts.
May this festival
bring more light and brighten our lives with health and happiness.
Happy KARTHIGAI DEEPAM
TO ALL
