The market complex is spread over an area of 295 acres.  It has around 3,100 shops, including more than 1,000 wholesale shops and 2,000 retail shops. It has four discrete blocks: two for vegetable and one each for fruit and flower market.

 The market has good infrastructure, including wide roads, truck bays, and adequate power and water supply.   The number of trucks and retailers increases during festival season. On an average, 1,500 Lorries and other heavy vehicles come to the market every day, bringing in vegetables, fruits, and flowers.

The market has a wheelchair accessible entrance and parking lot. The market has a food grains market that was the first of its kind in the state. The market receives about 100,000 visitors every day

 

In 2012, the market was declared a green complex. As part of this, about 1,000 trees were planted on the market premises. The complex also features a landscape with a compound wall, rainwater harvesting structures and solar lighting.

KWMC is located outside of Chennai's congested areas. It's accessible from all parts of the city. Retail traders set up shops on the roadside or "platform".  The market has reasonable prices and good service. The market has been the subject of waste management issues.
