 Kilchu (or Kilju) is a county in North Hamgyong province of North Korea. The name "Kilju" translates to "province of good fortune" and was bestowed by the Goryeo dynasty in 1107. The area was previously part of the ancient Goguryeo kingdom and inhabited by various Jurchen tribes before being annexed by the Goryeo kingdom. 


Location and History:

Name Origin:

The Goryeo dynasty, upon annexing the area in 1107, gave it the name "Kilju," which translates to "province of good fortune".

The area is known for its natural beauty and diverse ecosystem. It includes mountainous regions, river valleys, and coastal areas. 

Flora and Fauna:

The region supports a variety of plant and animal life, including wild mulberry trees, reeds, and various fish species in the rivers. Deforestation has reduced the populations of large animals like deer and tigers, but the area is still home to a variety of birds, including cranes and migratory waterfowl. 

Modern Significance:

Kilju County is a vital part of North Korea's regional landscape, playing a significant role in its various industries and cultural life.
