DO WRIST WATCHES DISTRACT US FROM BEING MINDFULL

   

  


In today's world where smartphones offer timekeeping, a wristwatch is generally considered a luxury item rather than a necessity, serving as a fashion accessory or a statement piece rather than a primary tool for telling time. 

Necessity vs Luxury:

Timekeeping is readily available:

Smartphones and smartwatches provide readily available timekeeping, making a traditional wristwatch less essential. 

Functionality vs. Fashion:

While watches can be a practical timekeeping tool, they are increasingly viewed as fashion accessories or status symbols. 

Luxury and Status:

Luxury watches, in particular, are often seen as symbols of wealth and status, driven by the brand name, craftsmanship, and materials used. 

Aspirational Motivation:

For some, owning a luxury watch becomes a goal, representing success and aspiration. 

Not a necessity:

Owning a watch is not a necessity like food, water, or sleep. 

 

For years, watches have been a symbol of success and status. To this day, that has not changed – while you might not strictly need a wrist watch anymore, adding one to your wardrobe can certainly take it to the next level when it comes to elegance and sophistication.


While wristwatches can be a tool for managing time and staying on schedule, they can also potentially distract from mindfulness, especially if they are used to check notifications or are constantly in the user's mind. 

 

Potential for Distraction:

Notifications: Smartwatches, with their constant stream of emails, texts, and social media alerts, can be a major distraction from the present moment.

Mindless Checking: Even with traditional watches, the habit of constantly glancing at the time can pull one's focus away from the current activity or experience.

Focus on Future/Past: Thinking about upcoming appointments or dwelling on past events while checking the time can disrupt mindfulness practice.

Potential for Mindfulness:

Time Awareness: A wristwatch can help one become more aware of how time is passing and how it's being used, promoting a more mindful approach to daily activities.

Reminder for Mindfulness: A glance at a watch can serve as a gentle reminder to pause, take a breath, and return to the present moment.

Meditation Aid: A watch can be used to set timers for meditation or to mark specific times for mindfulness practices.

Focus on the Present: By managing time effectively, a watch can help individuals focus on the task at hand without worrying about the clock or to-do list.

 

While intended as a simple tool, the watch became a trigger for distraction. Its presence on my wrist diverted my mind from focused tasks to unnecessary time-checking.

 

So choose and use wisely.
