The Tiruppavai is a collection of
30 stanzas, or pasurams, that are considered to be some of the most popular
examples of Vaiṣṇava Tamil devotion. The hymns are attributed to the
female poet-saint Andal, who is believed to have lived in the 9th
century. The Tiruppavai is part of the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, a collection
of works by the Alvars, a group of 12 poet-saints.
The poem describes a specific mode
of Viṣṇu worship, as well as his omnipotence and majesty. It also speaks
of ceremonial austerity, self-forgetting service to the Lord, and more.
