The most famous thing about
Margazhi is Thiruppavai. Sri Andal's thirty verses for the thirty days of this
holy month, are dedicated to the worship and praise of the Lord to the
exclusion of all other celebrations and earthly events.
Thiruppavai is a set of thirty
poems praising Maha Vishnu in Tamil. It was written by Andal also known as
Godha. She lived in Srivilliputhur, now in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil
Nadu in the 9th century.
For all 30 days of Margazhi month,
daily 1 Paasuram should be sung and each Paasuram explains the greatness of
Sriman Narayanan. These Paasurams can be sung daily but are said to be special
if we chant the 30 Paasurams for each day of this Margazhi month and each
Paasuram has its explanations and greatness.
Thiruppavai- an Anthology of 30
short Tamil poems composed by the child saint Andal or Kothai in
Srivilliputhur. This devotional hymn was composed by her while observing a 30-day
vratam.
One Pasuram each day of the Margazhi month.
Thiruppavai is unique for its literary, philosophical, religious, and artistic
content.
The practice of reciting one
paasuram (poem) of Thiruppavai each day during the Margazhi month is a way
to observe the 30-day vratam that the child saint Andal or Kodhai observed
while composing the anthology.
Andal's Thiruppavai is recited in
Margazhi because of the sacredness of the month. But Thiruppavai is so full of
Visishtadvaitic thoughts that it can be read throughout the year.
ANDAL revealed the meaning of
“Namo NaarAyaNAya” through ThiruppAvai. The Father and the Daughter revealed the
meaning of the AshtAkshara Manthram together. Therefore, we can recite
ThiruppallANDu and ThiruppAvai every day of the year.
Thiruppavai is said to be “Vedam
Anaithukkum Vithagum” meaning the seed of all Vedic Knowledge. Thiruppavai,
given to us by Andal for conducting our day-to-day activities, devotion,
understanding the ultimate reality, and attaining Mukti (salvation).
The first paasuram refers to God's
love for his devotees and his commitment to protecting them. The 30th
paasuram provides benedictions for a life filled with Kaimkaryam.
Andal is also known as Goda Devi,
who is the incarnation of Bhudevi. Andal is considered a teacher, a great
savior, and a poet.
Do try to recite Tirupavvai and
seek the blessing of the saint poet Andal.
