Power cuts are more in summers because demand is more
in summers and not enough matching supply.
In prioritizing what to do in a power outage, start
with protecting your expensive appliances and electronics. It doesn't matter if
the power is out for minutes or days, the risk of damage is the same. Follow
the same rules as you would to protect appliances from brownouts.
Sensitive devices should be on
surge protectors to prevent damage if you can't unplug them in time. Electrical
surges during power cuts can damage digital devices, such as phones, TVs,
laptops, and tablets, so turn them off or unplug them from the mains to keep them
safe.
Switch off and unplug appliances especially items such as
fires, cookers, irons, and hair straighteners in case you forget they're on
when power is restored. Leave a light switched on so you know when power is
restored. Avoid opening your fridge or freezer more than necessary.
Make sure you have multiple torches along with extra
batteries. Make sure you keep your mobile phone charged so you can make calls
in case of an emergency. Keep fridges and freezers closed, with a blanket over
as they will stay cold for many hours.
Leave at least one light on in the house, so that you know
when your electricity comes back on. If the power cut happens during daylight
hours, it's a good idea to turn one light switch on in case the outage
continues into the evening.
Follow these safety measures to keep you and your family
safe during power cuts.
