World Music Day is celebrated annually on June 21st. This
date was chosen to coincide with the summer solstice, a day symbolizing the
perfect balance of light and darkness. It serves as a metaphor for the harmony
and unity that music brings to our lives, transcending differences and
fostering a sense of togetherness.
The first all-day musical celebration on the day of the
summer solstice was originated by Jack Lang, then Minister of Culture of
France, as well as by Maurice Fleuret; it was celebrated in Paris in 1982. Since
then, its popularity has spread all over the globe, and now World Music Day is
celebrated on the same day in more than 1,000 cities in 120 countries,
including India, Italy, Australia, Peru, Canada, the UK and Japan.
Just as studying a foreign language gives a student a deeper
understanding of her native tongue, studying world music traditions can provide
surprising insights into Western musical thought and performance.
World Music Day is
all about breaking down barriers and creating an inclusive environment.
With the slogan "Faites de la musique" (Make Music), it invites
everyone, regardless of skill level, to participate and share their love of
music.
It coincides with the summer solstice, a day when singers
and musicians come together in public areas to celebrate the transformative
power of music. Using music as a common language, World Music Day aims to
promote musical diversity and strengthen community bonds.
This day is celebrated to promote music across the globe.
Budding and professional musicians are encouraged to showcase their talents at
different events, in their neighbourhoods, and in public places. A few places
in France and around the world organize free concerts for people.
It is a day to appreciate the beauty and diversity of
musical traditions from around the globe, fostering a sense of unity and cultural
exchange. World Music Day also emphasizes the importance of music in our lives.
Music has the power to evoke emotions, tell stories, and bring comfort.
Music can raise someone's mood, get them excited, or
make them calm and relaxed. Music also - and this is important - allows us to
feel nearly or possibly all emotions that we experience in our lives.
Listen to music and be joyful. Happy World Music Day
