Today, in 2024, the world marks the 100th anniversary of the
first international football tournament involving teams from all regions, held
on May 25, 1924, during the Summer Olympic Games in Paris.
As per UN resolution, the annual World Football Day on May
25 was declared to acknowledge “the global reach of football and its
impact in various spheres, including commerce, peace and diplomacy, and
recognizing that football creates a space for cooperation”.
The primary objectives of the World Football Day event are:
To celebrate the universal appeal and power of
football as a tool for positive social impact.
To provide a platform
for member states and stakeholders to share their experiences and perspectives
on how football can be leveraged to address global challenges.

Bhutia has had four spells at I-League football team East
Bengal Club, the club where he started his career. When he joined English club
Bury in 1999, he became the first Indian footballer to sign a contract with a

Mohammed Salim.
